Skiing is a great activity for anyone – it combines great exercise, beautiful views, and a good time to make a unique experience that nearly everyone enjoys. Great days can be ruined and money can be wasted, however, on equipment that is improperly cared for. By following a few simple steps, you can keep your equipment in great shape and ready to ride at the drop of a hat.
Before skiing, there are a few cardinal rules to follow. First, always keep your boots buckled when they aren’t being used. It seems silly, but the hard plastic shells stay in the perfect shape when buckled up – and when they aren’t, they flatten out into unnatural conditions. When this happens, it makes it difficult to buckle your boots up in the morning, and can make for an uncomfortable day on the slopes.
Second, make sure to warm your boots up before you strap them on! This is especially important if your boots are stored in a cold garage, or if you’ve got a habit of throwing them in the back of the pickup on your way to the resort. When boots are cold, the plastic becomes extremely stiff and inflexible, making them difficult to get on, and uncomfortable once they are on. Aside from that, when you start your day off with a cold boot you’re almost guaranteed to have cold feet all day. Your boot does a great job of insulating your foot from the cold air and snow, but if it’s cold to begin with, there’s not much hope.
After a day on the slopes, take a few minutes to dry your skis off. It’s awfully tempting to just throw them in the car and head home, but the extra time it takes will be well worth it. If your skis still have snow on them when you put them away, the edges will quickly rust, and you’ll be stuck with rusty edges or an expensive tuning bill.
Even if you keep your edges dry and rust free, its a good idea to give your skis a professional tune occasionally. Keeping your bases waxed will make them fast and durable, and a sharpened edge is predictable and responsive. Since the conditions of your skis deteriorates slowly under normal use, its easy to be lulled into thinking that they are handling just as well as they always have – but with a quick tune up, you’ll find that they’re easier and more fun to ski on.
Lastly, when those long summer months arrive, its important to find a good place to store your skis. Outside in a garage seems convenient, but its important to pay attention to the moisture levels in the area. In a garage where humidity can fluctuate wildly with the weather, skis are likely to rust – sometimes severely. While you’re bound to have some changes in humidity inside as well, skis tend to fare better there.

Includes liner notes by Nicky Garratt.Unlike most CDs with this title, this one is no slipshod, thrown-together, cheap make-a-buck CD. Live & Rare replaces Reagan Youth’s first (good but flawed) album as the real document of one of the better-remembered hardcore bands of early-’80s New York. When they were high schoolers, they regrettably didn’t have their sh*t together to accept an invitation for the seminal 1981 compilation New York Thrash, as befit their emergence as a beloved group on that genuinely fresh scene. But oddly enough, when Al Pike joined on bass and ’60s Who/Jam/Chords fan (such mod leanings were super-rare in N.Y. hardcore!) Steve Weissman took over the drums, they actually became a far more powerful and aggressive unit, twice the previous power. So it matters that Live & Rare is dedicated exclusively to the Pike/Weissman era (a little more than a year) and wisely compiles the best of five 1983 CBGB gigs and a few studio cuts when the band peaked. In contrast to their passable (but not as loud or smashing) studio work, this live stuff smokes as it should from the memory of these hot, sweaty, packed-in, wild, afternoon gigs. This takes you back! Whew! Although you’re deprived of the sight of charismatic, hyper-friendly, garrulous, big-eyed, oddly innocent, but somehow also super-intense frontman Dave Insurgent (whose descent into narcotics took the band down, then tragically took his life), his personality still drives this car. Perhaps the anti-system lyrics seem na?ve to the more “why bother” youth of today, but his irrepressible spirit was symptomatic of when everyone believed punk to be the true protest music of its time (and hand in hand, the true hot rock & roll of the period!) in that post-Watergate, Reagan-led era, a position history has validated and vindicated. Reagan Youth weren’t the best or the brightest in punk or hardcore, but like the other greats of 1982, they had a certain something — real belief, real distaste, and real camaraderie — and with the right band/attack this time, it’s exciting once more to hear. ~ Jack Rabid |

Golden State Funk – Impossibly Rare Funk From… $20.99 Is this truly impossibly rare Bay Area funk? Sure — half of these 20 cuts hadn’t even been released, a few others hadn’t been issued until they surfaced on some other early-21st century CD compilations, and the others appeared on very rare, very obscure releases in the late ’60s and early ’70s. As with any compilation that goes deep into rarities of a certain genre, this isn’t stuff you could seriously put on the same level as the best funk from the era, and it’s often derivative of major artists in the style. In this case, you’ll hear serious props given to Sly & the Family Stone, the psychedelic funk-era Temptations, and James Brown, among others. That doesn’t mean, however, that there aren’t a lot of good, fun cuts here — more so, in fact, than there usually are on such specialized rarity anthologies. While “Poor Sad Child Pts. 1-2″ by the Windjammers, for instance, is a total rip of the Norman Whitfield-produced Temptations, it’s a really good rip — something that really doesn’t happen too often anytime in pop music when there seems to be obvious and deliberate imitation/emulation involved. Also nearly great are the Love Experience’s “Are You Together for the New Day?,” with its nonstop wah-wah guitar and urgent call-and-response vocals between the lead and backup singers; Martin Holmes & the Uptights’ simmering, slightly Latin-influenced instrumental “Sweet Talk”; Wally Cox & the Natives’ exuberantly silly nonsense vocal party tune “Zu Zu”; and Ramona King’s similarly frivolous “Super Chicken.” And Jimmy Bee’s “Vida Blue, Pt. 1,” cut in 1971 in honor of the Oakland Athletics pitching sensation, is a must for baseball novelty disc fans, boogying as it does with genuine if standard-issue James Brown-styled thump. Sure, there are some tracks that don’t have much going for them but cookie-cutter funk competence, but even some of those are played and sung with an astonishing urgency over and above what the average material deserves. ~ Richie Unterberger |

Disco Love: Rare Disco & Soul Uncovered [LP] $21.98 Put together by Al Kent — not the Detroiter closely associated with Golden World, Ric-Tic, Motown, and Westbound, but the Scotsman born Ewan Kelly who is behind the Million Dollar Orchestra and Disco Demands series — Disco Love: Rare Disco & Soul Uncovered is another BBE release fostered by a desire to unearth every super-obscure `70s dancefloor tune. As Kent writes in the liner notes, most of the inclusions weren’t released on 12″, disco’s dominant format, and a fair portion of the contents don’t fall into the categorization of straight-ahead disco. But Kent handily molds the tracks into a discreetly blended sequence with an easy flow, and the result is fairly off-center and packed with grit — not surprising, given that the recording and pressing budgets were merely a fraction of those of the larger independent and major labels. If there is a relatively known or familiar selection, it’s Black Rock’s “New York City Bump,” and that would be because it was mixed by disco pioneer Tom Moulton and is based on B.T. Express’ number one R&B single “Do It (`Til You’re Satisfied).” While nothing is bound to make you wonder “Why wasn’t this a hit?,” there’s charm to spare, even when the material is prone to making the most hobbyist-tolerant discophile curl into a ball (as with Patricia White’s “Sweet Disco,” a shrill thing with random, off-beat mallet work and dueling saxophones that pierce). The best of the lot is Ross Carnegie & Co.’s “F Minor Disco” (also present on the second Disco Demands compilation), a pretty hot slice of mostly instrumental jazz-funk. Only the most dedicated disco freak is likely to get something out of it all; those looking for Chic-like elegance or Patrick Adams-level low-budget ingenuity need not check for it. Eight of the 14 cuts were re-edited by Kent, and a second disc features all 14 in unmixed form. ~ Andy Kellman |
